Virginia Alone

A thought-provoking installation by SL artist Bryn Oh, Virgina Alone tells stories of an isolated elderly woman and her ways of living with schizophrenia. Using a beautiful landscape and lovingly crafted settings, the artist has opened Virginia's story to SL viewers and invited them to share her reality.

Following the path through the remote landscape leads you to Virginia's home. Turn your sound up; I got goosebumps as I approached from the sound of the wind in the trees, the crickets and the creaking of the house itself.

Inside, you'll find Virginia and her stories, contained in boxes, bags, piles of objects, all hung with cobwebs.

Click on the tape recorders to hear Virginia's recordings; they are a glimpse into her life, a reality that's neither quite "real" nor quite "virtual." It's something different all together.

The installation has been in place since June, and I encourage everyone to spend some time there. It's a sensitive and profoundly moving exhibit that quietly questions what we think of as "mental illness" through the life that one woman has crafted in living with hers.

Virginia Alone is on display at the Immersiva sim. Read more about the installation and about Virginia on Bryn Oh's blog

Menstuff Hunt

There is still time to grab the great gifts being offered by 150 of the top menswear designers at the Menstuff Hunt. Check out the list of all the stores SLURLs along with a list of hints.

Hidden somewhere in the store will be the Menstuff T-shirt. Look closely, it could be tiny!
One of the managers of Menstuff is SkinTrader Grayskin, better known as Ahn, and he’s done a fantastic job of previewing all the gifts. But hurry, the hunt ends September 3, 2012.

Only in dreams

"When I started this project I had no idea that people's dreams and wishes would be so much scarier, personal and moving than their fears." The opening line of the notecard invitation to Pho Vinternatt's new exhibit of art and text sets the stage for a moving experience.

TPing in lands you in a totally white room, facing a blank wall.  Turning, a long white room is revealed, flanked on either side by a book-like display of photos with a facing page of text. The simple presentation belies the complexity of the exhibit: the headshots say more than is visible at first glance.

Each headshot is paired with text outlining the dreams of the subject. At once highly personal and utterly universal, these pairings offer the hopes, fears, desires, and regrets that we all carry in our hearts.

As with his previous exhibit "Fear," Pho has used the beauty and anonymity of our Second Lives to give light to the matters that haunt our first lives.

Hope for Emilia Raises Nearly $3000 USD for Victims

Blithe SL Magazine is pleased to share that Hope for Emilia raised a total of L$727,200 (USD 2944.13) to assist those affected by earthquakes in Italy earlier this year. A variety of wonderful designers created exclusive items to assist in the cause, donating 100% of the sales to help. Artists provided gorgeous pieces for fundraising and many talented individuals brought us fashion shows and dance entertainment. All transactions can be seen on the Hope for Emilia website. Blithe is grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of a fundraiser that will bring hope to so many who have seen their lives destroyed and we applaud the hard work of Anna Sapphire and the Hope for Emilia staff.

Cuddly Cuteness Exposed

If you're looking for to add some creature cuteness to your Second Life, these wearable Lil'Petz from the creators of Booshies may be just what you're looking for (especially if you're one of the many anxiously waiting for the full release). The pets are located in gatchas at Booshtopia and include several elements with a 5% chance of getting the rare versions. They are animated, adding more dimensions of cuteness, with actions including a cute wave from the Ibstomp (on shoulder) and flying from the Felitera (on head). The different species are in different gatchas, so you can choose your favorite when playing for your favorite color.

The Ibstomp really does more than just stand there, he just wasn't cooperating when the Felitera was being cute.

Black and White Television Event Success

The flamingos were very unhappy about this.
From the gorgeous giant television (built by Mr Gracemount) parked surrealistically amid the gorgeous the Malaika Park Sims landscape to the gift gray mesh eye set provided by Jacks Rhys of VerseEye, Blithe SL Magazine's August 1st Launch Party was a prime example of what can happen when people come together to make exciting things happen. Our partnership with Blue Balls for the event meant special prizes, but it really seemed like everyone was there for the fun theme, music, conversation (and there was great conversation), and the cause. Thanks to our extra-generous crowd, Hedonism staff's willingness to donate 50-75% of the tips for their hard work to the cause, and funds received through a very active sploder, we were able to raise L$29,000 for the cause, an incredible amount for a two hour event. Thank you to everyone who donated.

Stay tuned for the release of the website version of Blithe SL Magazine (Issuu won't mess up the cover the way SL did). We expect to have that up soon. We're beginning work on our next issue of Blithe SL Magazine, due out October 1st, and are looking forward to bringing you more great stories on those who make the Second Life gay community so great.
